What is a Lakmus (Litmus) Test Paper?

Litmus is a paper made of chemicals that will change color when immersed in an acid or base solution. The color produced is strongly influenced by the pH level in the existing solution.

All acids and bases have certain properties, not all acids have the same properties as well as bases. We also already know that acids are divided into two, namely weak acids and strong acids, as well as bases, there are strong bases and weak bases. The strength of an acid or base depends on how a compound is decomposed in the formation of ions when the compound is dissolved in water.

Acids or bases are also electrolytes, the conductivity of electrolyte solutions depends on the concentration of ions in solution. A strong electrolyte if it can be completely ionized so that the ion concentration is relatively large, a weak electrolyte if only a small part can be ionized, so the ion concentration is relatively small. To find out whether a solution is an electrolyte or not, you can use an electrolyte tester or you can also use a pH meter, and universal indicators to determine the pH of a solution directly so that it can be known whether the solution is an acid, a base or a salt. The pH value is indicated by a scale, systematically numbered from 0-14.

The color of litmus paper in acidic, basic, and neutral solutions is different. There are two kinds of litmus paper, namely red litmus and blue litmus. The properties of each litmus paper are as follows.

  1. Red litmus in an acidic solution is red and in a basic solution it is blue and in a neutral solution is red.
  2. Blue litmus in an acidic solution is red and in a basic solution it is blue and in a neutral solution is blue.
  3. Methyl red in acidic solution is red and in alkaline solution is yellow and in neutral solution is yellow.
  4. Methyl orange in acidic solution is red and in alkaline solution is yellow and in neutral solution is yellow.
  5. Phenolphthalein in an acidic solution will be colorless and in a basic solution it will be red purple and in a neutral solution it will be colorless.
