Paper Packaging Functions and Disadvantages

google.com

Paper packaging is a packaging that was invented before the existence of flexible plastic and aluminum foil packaging. Paper packaging is widely used compared to metal and plastic packaging because paper packaging is relatively cheap, unique, and environmentally friendly.

Paper packaging is also widely used because it can be a medium for communicators and printing media for both graphic designs and writings. However, behind the advantages, paper packaging has a weakness that is not resistant to water and is easily affected by the humidity of the air around the paper packaging. Therefore, paper packaging is easily damaged.

Paper Packaging Function

The function of paper packaging is basically the same as the function of packaging in general. The functions of packaging include the practical function of packaging, the function of attracting consumer interest, and the function in life. The practical function of packaging is a function that is applied by producers so that consumers are comfortable or easy to carry a product.

The function of practical packaging is further divided into three functions, namely to accommodate the product during distribution, protect and maintain the quality (preserve) of the product, and increase efficiency. The purpose of the function of accommodating the product during distribution is so that the product remains safe and there is no damage during the distribution process from the producer to the consumer. The function of protecting and maintaining product quality is to protect the packaged product from things that can damage or reduce the quality of the packaged product. Things that can damage the product include ultraviolet light, humidity, impact, friction, microbial contamination, and dirt, as well as other things.

The efficiency function is a function that considers the efficiency of packaging in the process of controlling, distributing, as well as efficiency for consumers of a product both in terms of convenience when carrying and in terms of its economy. Functions in attracting consumer interest, among others, are in terms of promotional (marketing), symbolic, and aesthetic functions. Promotion function is a function used by producers to attract consumers. The packaging of a product must be planned as well as possible so that it can compete in the market both from the product and the way of packaging and labeling a product.

The symbolic function is the function used by producers in packaging products by distinguishing the packaging of a product from other products, in other words, each product has its own characteristics from the packaging so that consumers can recognize it only from the packaging. The aesthetic function is a function that emphasizes the artistic value of product packaging that can attract consumer interest.

Packaging functions as a controller of a product in protecting consumers. For consumers, packaging can provide product information about the composition, amount of energy, and safety when consuming so that consumers can easily decide to choose a product.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Paper Packaging

Paper packaging has advantages and disadvantages, namely:
  • Paper is a lightweight material because of its relatively low density
  • Paper is not resistant to liquids, moisture, and gases.
  • The stiffness of the paper is semi because it can be shaped but not easily broken.
  • The coating on paper packaging can make the paper resistant to liquids, moisture, and gases.
  • Easily absorb moisture and liquid (oil, water)
  • Easily torn when exposed to liquid
  • Easy to print and design on the packaging surface.
